La Citadelle was built to protect Haiti from French attacks. It was also a safe
place for the sodiers to stay in case of an attack from the French and from the
south of Haiti. Christophe, who was a general in the Haitian army and chief
administrator of the country's northern regions at the time, organized the
building of La Citadelle. Between the years of 1805 and 1820 he had 20,000 workers working on
the building process.
La Citadelle is the largest fortress in the Americas. The cisterns and storehouses in the fortress were able to store up food and water for 5,000 defenders, for as long as to one year. Inside it there are dungeons, bathing quarters, and bakery ovens. And it also contains 365 cannons of different sizes.
